From the iconic Snowflake hands in the Black Bay collection to the patented features of the Pelagos, every watch part is considered, right down to the very last detail. TUDOR makes the kind of timepieces you'll wear day-in, day-out - and you’ll be more than willing to do so. But what is it about TUDOR that has created such a ‘die-hard’ following? The unparalleled Swiss craftsmanship? Timelessly elegant designs? We take a look into the sister brand of Rolex and what makes them the brand to beat...
Behind the brand
With an aim to offer a more affordable watch that would still preserve the Rolex reputation for quality, the TUDOR brand was born in Geneva in 1926. Exclusively sold in Australia, the first TUDOR watches were elegant dress watches, a far cry from some of TUDOR’s most popular watches of today. By 1947, TUDOR had launched their first waterproof watch with the Oyster, steering away from the dress watch aesthetic of the time.
Continuing with its move away from dress watches, TUDOR focused on emphasising the brand’s qualities of strength, reliability and precision subsequently seeing the launch of the TUDOR Oyster Prince, a sporty and robust watch used in the Royal Navy’s British Science Expedition. By 1954, the French Navy became a key role in the brand’s creation of dive watches and 1970 saw the launch of TUDOR’s first chronograph to introduce a self-winding movement. Since the brand’s relaunch in 2009, the only way has been up, with the introduction of stable collections that have become firm favourites in the horology world. And we think it goes without saying, TUDOR have well and truly succeeded in what they first set out to achieve.
