View Our BoutiquesFounded in 1884, Breitling is a leading Swiss watchmaker. The innovative company invented the modern chronograph and pioneered the navigational tool watch. Today, it’s still breaking new ground as a casual, inclusive and sustainable luxury brand. Breitling’s collections centre around air, land, and sea pursuits, all captured in the brand’s unmistakable modern-retro style. The exceptional quality of every watch movement is confirmed by its status as a COSC-certified chronometer, and the brand remains one of only a handful of independent watchmakers to produce its own manufacture calibres. Combining classic watchmaking with the latest innovations, Breitling is a company with history which is also ahead of its time.
Behind the brand
With a long history of creating chronographs for use in science, sport and industry, Breitling was first established in 1884 by the pioneer and namesake, Leon Breitling, who opened his workshop in the Swiss Jura Mountains. After a move to the heart of Swiss watchmaking, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Breitling went on to create the first wristwatch chronograph with an independent push piece, an invention that was to become one of many steps into the world of aviation.
In 1923, Breitling perfected the independent push piece, enabling watch wearers to add several successive times without returning the hands to zero (the perfect invention for the sports and aviation fans amongst you). Continuing their plight in aviation, in 1936 they became the Official RAF supplier and by 1950 on board chronographs became the standard equipment for commercial aviation. But it wasn’t all about planes. Just two years later the Breitling Navitimer launched following the success of the Chronomat. In 1984, the Chronomat saw an update becoming the watch that is known and loved by many. And today? All modern-day Breitling models (both mechanical and quartz), are certified chronometers, independently tested by COSC. Or in other words, with every Breitling timepiece, you’re experiencing one of the most advanced heartbeats in the world. Impressive, right?
